Building upon the success of the previous year, the client was keen to evolve the GFX to include more city level maps and also include something new, DOOH (Digital Out of Home) - to create a sense that the event has overtaken the city.

Firstly they were not concerned about being attached to the identity of the famous NY Ball Drop, which allowed for Iterating the global map transition to be less constrained. The maps were given a city level transition for four locations, New York, Chicago, Las Vegas and Puerto Rico, compared to just New York last year. The BlenderGIS Blender add-on was dusted off and used to build 1:1 scale model for all the cities. Topology data was leveraged to showcase the terrain of Puerto Rico and the surrounding mountains of Las Vegas.

The DOOH or AR aspect of the project involved camera tracking and compositing using plates captured around NY. Most shots had little movement which allowed for a 2D track in After Effects to suffice. The Bus shot required the most work. Deadlines were tight so we had to make the dodgy camera track work for us. Some geometry was modelled off the point cloud generated by the camera track, which was intact enough to sell the shot. It was also the client's favourite shot of the 6 that were produced.
